Our Story

means “Beautiful”

Bella was Owner Joyce Shanks’ grandmother, a small Italian woman, barely 4’11” who read tea leaves during the Depression for “Pin Money”. She raised her family on Nostrand Avenue in Brooklyn, where she and her husband William were hailed as the neighborhood’s best cooks. Together they cooked up a storm for friends and family alike. Years later, Joyce decided to Follow in her Grandmother’s footsteps. She and her Husband Jim opened Bella’s in 1993 to bring Bella’s cooking to Habersham Village. For the past thirty years, They too have been cooking up a storm,  and are proud to have become “Where Savannah Eats Italian.”

I can still hear Grandma Bella calling out from the kitchen, Mangia! Mangia!” as she brought a bubbling Cannelloni to the dinner table. She had a knack for bringing friends and family together. She always used to say, “A tavola non s’inivecchia” (At the Table, one never gets old). As soon as I was tall enough to see over the countertops, I was permitted in the kitchen to learn from the master. I worked alongside my grandmother for years, taking note of every detail. Our Marinara & Alfredo sauce recipes have been passed down for generations. Our Manicotti and Pasta & Bean Soup are as close to Grandma Bella’s as possible. I only hope we have done her recipes some justice, and that our guests will enjoy them as much as our family does.”
